History The first vertical take-off with a transition to a horizontal flight and back took place on November 2, 1954. XFY-1 POGO represents on of the ways to "vertical take-off and landing" aircraft, designed especially for ship decks. All-metal Pogo used the Allison YT40-A-14 engine and counter-rotating propellers. A large vertical stabilizer above the wing was matched by an equally sized ventral fin. The seat was inclined 45° toward the instrument panel for vertical flight. There were tree prototypes made, the last one is exhibited in the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington D.C.
